Grain-oriented materials are commonly used in power, instrumentation, and current transformers, and are also used as core materials in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems. Arnold grain-oriented materials of 0.006 inch (0.15 mm) and 0.004 inch (0.10 mm) thickness are commonly used for applications with frequencies below 1 KHz. Higher frequency applications typically use 0.001 inch (0.025 mm) and 0.002 inch (0.05 mm) materials.
In higher frequency applications, the use of thinner materials can reduce the negative impact of core loss caused by eddy currents. Core loss is minimized, so is heat accumulation.
